Your first appointment generally involves a discussion about your concerns or issues that have led you to seek help.  Questions are about thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behaviours in situations that might cause distress, and situations where you feel calmer.  For example, visiting shopping centres may be distressing but spending time at home may be more comfortable.  Once an understanding has been obtained of your concerns a plan is discussed about the type of treatment that might be suitable.

At Peak Psychology Clinic treatment may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy which focuses around childhood origins of a person’s distress, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Imaginal Exposure for the treatment of PTSD or for child related issues treatment from the Positive Parent Program.  All pscyhological treatment approaches used at Peak Psychology Clinic are evidence based.

Change following psychological treatment can occur rapidly for some people and less quickly for others.  Generally, changes may occur within several sessions but significant changes are more obvious over 6-12 sessions.  Treatment outcomes often occur faster if the person is willing to complete home exercises which might consist of recording mood, thoughts or behaviours.
